At the start of the fourteenth century Hungary was not really governed by its king: a handful of great lords held whole provinces as their own. Charles Robert spent years breaking them, and in the fighting of 1312 — the year of the Battle of Rozhanovce near Košice — Kapušany was destroyed. It passed to the royal chamber, with a castellan of the Tarczay family holding it for the crown. Around 1410 Andrew Tétényi acquired it, rebuilt the defences and began calling himself Kapy after the castle. Note the direction: the family took its name from the place, not the place from the family.
