The Ottoman centuryOsmanské storočie
Kapušany CastleKapušiansky hrad
After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the front line of a very long war ran across southern Hungary, and every castle in the north had to think about artillery. Tall thin medieval walls, excellent against ladders, shatter under cannon fire. So in the second half of the sixteenth century Kapušany was rebuilt to suit what gunpowder had done to siege warfare: the defences were reshaped so that guns could be worked from them and so that the masonry could absorb a hit rather than crack. It is worth remembering that the Ottoman front never actually reached this valley. The rebuilding was insurance, and it was normal — half the castles of Upper Hungary did the same.
