History of ZuberecDejiny — Zuberec

Zuberec was cleared and settled on a high plateau under the Roháče in the 1590s, wiped out twice in its first century, and rebuilt both times. Its best-known sight is not the village at all but the Museum of the Orava Village at Brestová, three kilometres above it — a hillside of Orava log buildings, every one of them taken down somewhere else and put back together here, on a meadow where nothing had ever stood.

  1. 15931593 Five houses on the plateauPäť domov na planine

The name Zuberec comes from the zubor, the European bison that was still hunted in these mountains; a ridge above the village carries the same name. The settlement appears in writing in 1593 as Zwberczyc, with a šoltýs — the man who organised a new village and held a share of it in return — and five peasant homesteads. Like its neighbours it was founded under Wallachian law, the lighter terms the Thurzo family offered to anyone willing to clear forest and keep animals on ground this high. At around 800 metres the growing season is short and the winter long, so this was never a corn village: sheep, cattle and timber from the very beginning.

In 1604 the village went out of existence. Hajdúks — irregular soldiers — plundering during the uprising of István Bocskai against the Habsburgs took it apart, and when a census was made in 1608 nobody was living here at all. In 1609 it appears again as a new settlement, Zubercza, and in 1612 the palatine Juraj Thurzo issued a charter to the šoltýs Jakub Baran setting out what he owed and what was owed to him; Baran was still šoltýs in 1619, with five Wallachian farmers under him. Notice how fast that went: eight years from nothing to a chartered village. Land nobody else wanted could always be resettled, because there were always people with nothing.V roku 1604 dedina zanikla.

  3. 16831683 The year Zuberec was finished offRok, keď Zuberec dorazili

1683 is the year the Ottoman army stood before Vienna and a Polish and Lithuanian army marched to relieve it. Zuberec's own record says the rear guard of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski completed the ruin of the village, taking the grain and driving off the livestock. Habovka, three kilometres down the road, remembers the same passage as Lithuanian troops who burned it out entirely. By 1690 only three holdings had been resettled. It is a useful correction to a habit in Slovak local history, where nearly every ruin gets blamed on the Turks: here the Ottomans never came, and the damage was done by the army marching against them.Rok 1683 je rokom, keď osmanské vojsko stálo pred Viedňou a poľsko-litovská armáda šla mesto vyslobodiť. Zuberecký záznam hovorí, že skazu dediny dovŕšil zadný voj poľského kráľa Jána III. Sobieskeho, ktorý pobral obilie a odohnal dobytok. Habovka tri kilometre nižšie si ten istý prechod pamätá ako litovské vojská, ktoré ju úplne vypálili. Do roku 1690 sa podarilo znovu osídliť iba tri usadlosti. Je to užitočná oprava zvyku slovenských miestnych dejín, kde sa takmer každá zrúcanina zvaľuje na Turkov: sem Osmani nikdy neprišli a škodu narobilo vojsko, ktoré proti nim tiahlo.

  4. 1715–17781715 – 1778 Thirty families, lime and linenTridsať rodín, vápno a plátno

By 1715 Zuberec was back to thirty farming families, roughly 150 people. What they lived on says a good deal about the place: not grain but sheep, cattle, burnt lime and woven cloth — the things you can make when the field will not feed you. The same two years brought what the records call the frozen years, when the harvest failed and people went hungry. Over the rest of the century the village grew hard: by the 1770s about 129 dependent peasant families were paying dues on ground that had carried five homesteads within their grandparents' memory. Tie isté dva roky priniesli to, čo záznamy nazývajú zamrznutými rokmi: úroda vyhorela mrazom a ľudia hladovali. Zvyšok storočia dedina rástla tvrdo: v sedemdesiatych rokoch 18. storočia tu platilo dávky okolo 129 poddanských rodín na pôde, kde ešte za pamäti ich starých otcov stálo päť usadlostí.

  5. 1831–18481831 – 1848 Cholera, hunger, and a freedom that changed littleCholera, hlad a sloboda, ktorá zmenila málo

Cholera swept Orava in 1831 and killed 76 people in Zuberec, eight of them from a single family. Famine years followed from 1845 to 1847. In between came 1848 and the abolition of serfdom — which in Orava mattered less than the word suggests, because the fields here were small and high, and the forest, the one thing that could actually pay, stayed with the estate. Free villagers went on hiring themselves to the Orava Composessorate to cut its trees. The population kept rising on ground that could not feed it, and that pressure is what sends the next generation to the ships.V roku 1831 prešla Oravou cholera a v Zuberci si vyžiadala 76 životov, z toho osem v jednej rodine.

  6. 1870–19101870 – 1910 A thousand people, and then the shipsTisíc ľudí a potom lode

In 1870 Zuberec had 182 houses and 1,007 inhabitants; a century earlier it had held about 332 people. That growth had nowhere to go. Cholera returned in 1873 and killed 56 in the village, scarlet fever took 57 children under ten in the parish in 1880, and from the 1880s people began leaving for the United States, Canada, Argentina and Australia. The heaviest wave ran from 1900 to 1910, and by the 1930s the village held about thirteen per cent fewer people than in 1870. Emigration was not an adventure here. It was the alternative to hunger, and it emptied Orava faster than any war had.V roku 1870 mal Zuberec 182 domov a 1 007 obyvateľov; o sto rokov skôr ich bolo asi 332.

  7. 1927–19331927 – 1933 The church of Saint WendelinKostol svätého Vendelína

Zuberec built its church between the wars, and the dates show how long that took a poor village. Permission was given on 8 November 1927, the foundation stone was laid on 6 October 1929, the walls went up between 1930 and 1932, and it was consecrated in 1933 by Andrej Hlinka, the Catholic priest and politician whose party would dominate Slovak politics. The patron chosen was Saint Wendelin, the shepherds' saint — an exact description of what this village lived on. Those same years, 1929 to 1933, were the Great Depression, and they sent another wave of Zuberec people abroad.Kostol si Zuberec postavil medzi vojnami a dátumy ukazujú, ako dlho to chudobnej dedine trvalo. Povolenie prišlo 8. novembra 1927, základný kameň položili 6. októbra 1929, murovalo sa v rokoch 1930 až 1932 a v roku 1933 kostol posvätil Andrej Hlinka, katolícky kňaz a politik, ktorého strana ovládla slovenskú politiku. Tie isté roky, 1929 až 1933, boli rokmi veľkej hospodárskej krízy a poslali do sveta ďalšiu vlnu Zuberčanov.

  8. 1939–19451939 – 1945 The war, and what it did hereVojna a to, čo tu spravila

Czechoslovakia was broken up in March 1939 and the Slovak State that followed was a client of Nazi Germany, led by the party of the priest who had consecrated this church six years earlier. The Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944 and Orava lay on its northern edge; German units held the valley through the winter while partisans used the forests, and the front arrived at the end of March 1945, when German troops burned 75 houses at Trstená as they withdrew. Zuberec has left no separate written account of its own losses in those months.Československo sa v marci 1939 rozpadlo a Slovenský štát, ktorý prišiel po ňom, bol klientom nacistického Nemecka a viedla ho strana kňaza, ktorý o šesť rokov skôr posvätil tunajší kostol.

  9. 1949–19871949 – 1987 The mountain becomes a national parkZ hory sa stáva národný park

On 18 December 1948 the law creating the Tatra National Park was passed; it came into force on 1 January 1949 and made this the first national park in Slovakia. The Roháče above Zuberec were at first only in its buffer zone, and a government decree in 1987 moved the Western Tatras into the park proper. That is why the road stops at Zverovka and why the high paths are closed from the beginning of November to the middle of June — not tidiness, but a legal protection regime, and one that turned the mountain above the village into a destination with rules.18. decembra 1948 prijali zákon o Tatranskom národnom parku; účinnosť nadobudol 1. januára 1949 a urobil z neho prvý národný park na Slovensku.

  10. 1967–19751967 – 1975 A village that was never builtDedina, ktorá nikdy nevznikla

By the 1960s Orava's log buildings were coming down faster than anyone could record them. The Orava Museum's answer was a meadow at Brestová, three kilometres above Zuberec: the foundation stone was laid on 24 September 1967 and the Museum of the Orava Village opened to the public in 1975. More than fifty buildings were dismantled in villages across the valley, carted here and re-erected as a village that never existed — a market row from the lower valley, a Goral hamlet from the upper one, a mill stream with a water mill and a sawmill. Its oldest building came the same way: a timber church of Saint Elizabeth from Zábrež in the lower valley, built at the beginning of the fifteenth century, with a late Gothic painted ceiling, rebuilt on the slope at the top of the site.V šesťdesiatych rokoch padali oravské zruby rýchlejšie, než ich stihol niekto zdokumentovať.

  11. since 1989od roku 1989 The modern village and the old one above itModerná dedina a tá stará nad ňou

Zuberec grew quickly in the second half of the twentieth century — 1,061 people in 1961, 1,415 in 1980, 1,654 in 1991, with more than seventy holiday cottages built by then — and it grew in concrete and render, not in spruce beams. That is the thing visitors get wrong: the village itself is an ordinary working place of modern houses, and the log architecture is all three kilometres up the road, on a site where nothing stands where it was built. Both are honest. If you want Orava log houses standing on their own ground, the answer is Podbiel at the mouth of the valley; if you want to see how such a village worked, furnished and complete, the answer is Brestová.Zuberec v druhej polovici 20. storočia rýchlo rástol — v roku 1961 tu žilo 1 061 ľudí, v roku 1980 to bolo 1 415 a v roku 1991 už 1 654, k tomu vyše sedemdesiat chát — a rástol v betóne a omietke, nie v smrekových trámoch.
