Zuberec lies high in the side valley that runs south-east off the main Orava valley towards the mountains. Habovka is below it, Podbiel and the Orava river below that; above it the road goes on to Zverovka and stops, because the Roháče begin. The village sits at around eight hundred metres — a short growing season and a long winter — and everything above it lies inside the Tatra National Park.Zuberec leží vysoko v bočnej doline, ktorá odbočuje z hlavnej oravskej doliny na juhovýchod k horám. Zuberec was a clearing-and-herding village like its neighbours — sheep on the pastures, spruce on the slopes — and the village itself today is largely modern.Zuberec bol klčovacou a pastierskou dedinou ako jeho susedia — ovce na pasienkoch, smrek na svahoch — a dnes je jeho zástavba prevažne nová.
What is remarkable arrived by decision. By the middle of the twentieth century Orava's log architecture was going down faster than anyone could record it, and the Orava Museum chose a meadow at Brestová, some three kilometres up the road, as the place to put the best of what could be saved. Buildings were dismantled in villages across the valley, carted here and re-erected; the museum opened to the public in the mid-1970s and has grown since.To pozoruhodné sem prišlo rozhodnutím. V polovici 20. storočia miznula oravská drevená architektúra rýchlejšie, než ju stíhal ktokoľvek zdokumentovať, a Oravské múzeum si vybralo lúku na Brestovej, asi tri kilometre cestou nad obcou, za miesto, kam sa uloží to najlepšie, čo sa dá zachrániť. Stavby rozoberali v dedinách po celej doline, vozili sem a stavali nanovo. Múzeum sprístupnili verejnosti v polovici sedemdesiatych rokov a odvtedy rástlo.
The oldest building came the same way: a late-Gothic timber church, brought from Zábrež down in the lower valley and rebuilt on the slope at the top of the museum.Najstaršia stavba areálu sa sem dostala rovnako: neskorogotický drevený kostolík priviezli z obce Zábrež v dolnej časti doliny a postavili ho na svahu v hornej časti múzea.

The museum is laid out as a village that never existed: a market row of houses from the lower valley, a Goral hamlet from the upper one, and a mill stream with a water mill and a sawmill, on a wooded slope with the church above. Interiors are furnished rather than emptied, down to the tools and the bedding, and animals are kept there.Múzeum je usporiadané ako dedina, ktorá nikdy neexistovala: trhový rad domov z dolnej doliny, goralská osada z hornej a mlynský potok s vodným mlynom a pílou, rozložené po zalesnenom svahu s kostolom nad nimi. Interiéry sú zariadené, nie vyprázdnené, až po náradie a posteľnú bielizeň, a v areáli sa chovajú hospodárske zvieratá.
The walk takes a couple of hours if you go into things, and the pleasure of it is comparative: a poor cottage from the upper valley and a well-off farmstead from the lower one stand a few minutes apart, so differences in size, in glazing and in carving are laid out side by side. Above the museum the road ends at Zverovka and the mountain paths start: to the Roháče tarns, to the waterfall below them, and on to the ridge. High trails in the national park are closed from the beginning of November to the middle of June, which is not a formality.Nad múzeom cesta končí na Zverovke a začínajú horské chodníky: k roháčskym plesám, k vodopádu cestou k nim a ďalej na hrebeň. Vysokohorské chodníky v národnom parku sú od začiatku novembra do polovice júna uzavreté, a nie je to formalita.
Living village, not a museumŽivá obec, nie skanzen
Brestová is a skanzen and makes no pretence otherwise: nothing on that ground stands where it was built. The timber is original Orava timber, taken down beam by beam and put back together here, with replacements where a beam had rotted through — but the site was an empty meadow, and the village it forms is a curator's arrangement, not a settlement.Brestová je skanzen a netvári sa inak: ani jedna stavba tam nestojí na mieste, kde ju postavili. Drevo je pôvodné oravské, rozobrané brvno po brvne a tu znovu poskladané, s výmenami tam, kde bolo drevo prehnité — no samotný areál bol prázdnou lúkou a dedina, ktorú tvorí, je kurátorskou skladbou, nie sídlom.
Zuberec itself, three kilometres down the road, is an ordinary working village of mostly modern houses, and visitors who expect it to look like the museum are regularly surprised. For Orava log houses standing where their builders put them, go to Podbiel at the mouth of this valley.Samotný Zuberec tri kilometre nižšie je bežná fungujúca obec s prevažne novými domami a návštevníci, ktorí čakajú, že bude vyzerať ako múzeum, bývajú prekvapení. Za oravskými drevenicami, ktoré stoja tam, kde ich stavitelia postavili, treba ísť do Podbiela pri ústí tejto doliny.
Getting thereAko sa tam dostať
Buses run up the valley from Dolný Kubín and Tvrdošín through Podbiel and Habovka, and on to Zverovka in season; the nearest stations on the Kraľovany-Trstená branch line are Podbiel and Tvrdošín. By car it is the signposted turn off the main valley road at Podbiel, and the museum has its own car park at Brestová.Autobusy chodia dolinou z Dolného Kubína a Tvrdošína cez Podbiel a Habovku a v sezóne aj ďalej na Zverovku; najbližšie stanice na trati Kraľovany – Trstená sú Podbiel a Tvrdošín. Autom ide o značenú odbočku z hlavnej oravskej cesty v Podbieli a múzeum má vlastné parkovisko na Brestovej.
