The village is named after the hill above it: Podbiel means under the Biela, the white rock. In August 2019 archaeologists from the Orava Museum went over the ground there with a magnetometer, an instrument that reads buried structures without digging, and then opened trenches. They found a dark sunken band running like the line of a rampart, post-holes from log buildings, decorated pottery, animal bone and a small bronze pendant, and dated the material to the turn of the Hallstatt and La Tène periods, roughly the fifth and fourth centuries before Christ. Podbiel calls those people Celtic Kotíni, which is what local tradition says; Roman writers place the Kotíni in these mountains rather later, so the honest version is that somebody thought this hill worth defending long before anyone wrote down the name of the place.Obec má meno podľa kopca nad sebou: Podbiel znamená pod Bielou, pod bielou skalou. V auguste 2019 tam archeológovia Oravského múzea najprv prešli terén magnetometrom, prístrojom, ktorý zachytí zahrabané konštrukcie bez kopania, a potom otvorili sondy. Našli tmavý, do podložia zahĺbený pás, ktorý vyzerá ako línia opevnenia, kolové jamy po zrubových stavbách, zdobenú keramiku, zvieracie kosti a malý bronzový prívesok, a nálezy zaradili na rozhranie halštatskej a laténskej doby, teda približne do 5. až 4. storočia pred Kristom. Podbiel týchto ľudí nazýva keltskými Kotínmi, ako hovorí miestna tradícia; rímski autori však Kotínov kladú do týchto hôr až neskôr, takže poctivejšie je povedať, že tento kopec považoval niekto za hodný obrany dávno predtým, ako sa meno obce prvý raz zapísalo.
