PodbielPodbiel

Nobody was living at Podbiel in 1241. This whole valley was royal forest — hunting ground and frontier, without villages. What the Mongol invasion changed was not the valley but the way the kingdom was held: Béla IV came back to a burnt country convinced that the answer was stone castles, held by lords who owed him service, with settlers brought in to work the land around them. Orava appears in the documents as a castle district in 1267, with a castle on its rock above the river. Every later question at Podbiel — who owned the forest, who was allowed to clear it, who collected the dues — was settled by that arrangement.V roku 1241 v Podbieli nikto nežil.
