Zlaté MoravceZlaté Moravce

In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal army at Muhi and rode across the kingdom, and open country like this valley had nothing to hide behind. King Béla IV's answer, once the Mongols had withdrawn, was a building programme: stone castles on defensible hills, granted to nobles who would garrison and maintain them. The two ruins above Zlaté Moravce — Gýmeš over Jelenec and Hrušov over Hostie — belong to that generation of castles, put up in the Tribeč in the decades after the invasion. Almost every castle you can see from a Slovak road exists because of one bad summer.
