During the sixteenth century most of Moldava went over to the Reformed church, and a letter of 1558 already names its pastor and its church property. The same century brought wars, epidemics and Ottoman raids, and fires late in the 1500s destroyed most of the town, leaving the stone church standing almost alone. Be exact about the Turks here, because the local story is usually told too simply: after Eger fell to the Ottomans in 1596 raiding parties could reach the Bodva valley, but no Ottoman garrison ever held Moldava. To isté storočie prinieslo vojny, epidémie a turecké nájazdy a požiare na jeho konci zničili väčšinu mesta; stáť zostal takmer len kamenný kostol. S Turkami tu však treba byť presný, lebo miestne rozprávanie to zvykne zjednodušiť: po páde Jágra do osmanských rúk v roku 1596 dosahovali nájazdy až do doliny Bodvy, ale osmanská posádka Moldavu nikdy nedržala. Mesto vypálili nájazdníci, prechádzajúce vojská a celkom obyčajný oheň v obci postavenej z dreva.
