The Mongol army tore through the Kingdom of Hungary in 1241 and left whole districts empty; King Béla IV spent the following decades bringing in settlers and ordering stone castles built. The Hungarian name of this town, Szepsi, means 'the one from Spiš', and the usual explanation is that it was resettled by German colonists brought down from the Spiš towns after the invasion.
