Slovakia is a walking country. A dense network of waymarked paths — some fifteen thousand kilometres of it — runs from the Danube floodplain to the granite ridges of the Tatras, and almost all of it is free to walk.Slovensko je krajina pre chodcov. What surprises visitors is the sheer density of it. Waymarked paths reach almost every ridge, saddle and hilltop village in the country, maintained by the Klub slovenských turistov and its volunteers, and marked with a system that has barely changed in a century. Three kinds of walkingTri druhy turistiky
The high mountains are the Tatras: bare granite, tarns, chains and a short season. The gorges are their opposite — Slovenský raj and the Malá Fatra send you up ladders and catwalks beside waterfalls, in ravines where the walls are close enough to touch on both sides.Vysokohorská turistika sú Tatry: holá žula, plesá, reťaze a krátka sezóna. Two things catch people out. High Tatra trails above the huts are closed from 1 November to 15 June — not a recommendation but a rule, and the reason spring visitors find the good paths shut. And the gorges of Slovenský raj are largely one-way, uphill only, because you cannot pass someone on a ladder.Dve veci ľudí prekvapia. Vysokohorské chodníky nad chatami sú od 1. novembra do 15. júna zatvorené — nie je to odporúčanie, ale pravidlo, a preto jarní návštevníci nachádzajú tie najlepšie trasy zavreté. A rokliny Slovenského raja sú prevažne jednosmerné, iba nahor, pretože na rebríku sa dvaja ľudia nevyhnú.

Most of what follows sits in the north: the Tatras and the Nízke Tatry across the Liptov basin from them, the Malá and Veľká Fatra to the west, and Slovenský raj on the edge of the Spiš. The east has the quietest walking in the country, in the Vihorlat and the Poloniny.Väčšina toho, čo nasleduje, leží na severe: Tatry a Nízke Tatry cez Liptovskú kotlinu, Malá a Veľká Fatra na západe a Slovenský raj na okraji Spiša.
