The Velvet Revolution of November 1989 ended communist rule, and within months the border regime along the Morava was dismantled. For the people of Veľké Leváre that meant the water meadows a few kilometres west of their houses were theirs again after forty years. What came back was a surprise: precisely because the floodplain had been sealed off and barely touched, it had become one of the richest wetlands in central Europe, and it is protected today — as is the Abrod reserve in the north of the village's land. Pre Levárčanov to znamenalo, že lužné lúky pár kilometrov na západ od ich domov sú po štyridsiatich rokoch zase ich. To, čo sa vrátilo, bolo prekvapenie: práve preto, že bola niva uzavretá a takmer nedotknutá, stala sa z nej jedna z najbohatších mokradí strednej Európy a dnes je chránená — rovnako ako rezervácia Abrod na severe chotára. Tam, kde bol ostnatý drôt, vedie popri rieke cyklotrasa.
