In 1377 King Louis I gave this place to the counts of Svätý Jur and Pezinok, and from then on it was run as part of their Pajštún estate; a charter of the Bratislava chapter dated the following year writes the name as Noglew. All three of its later names say the same thing — Slovak Leváre, Hungarian Nagylévárd and German Großschützen all mean the great archers — and the place is remembered as a settlement of archers watching the road along the Morava. An older county tradition puts those archers here as early as the tenth century, but nothing written survives from before the 1370s, and a first mention is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived. Staršia župná tradícia ich sem kladie už do 10. storočia, lenže z čias pred sedemdesiatymi rokmi 14. storočia sa nezachovalo nič písané a prvá zmienka je údaj o listine, nie o tom, kedy sem ľudia prišli. Roku 1397 sa v prameňoch spomína kostol aj farnosť, takže vtedy tu už stála riadna dedina, nielen strážne stanovisko.
