The village first appears in writing in 1262, spelt Sueta — a fact about a document rather than about when people arrived, since the church was standing well before that. It belonged to the estate of Jelšava, the nearest town. In the fourteenth century the inside of the rotunda was painted: the legend of St Margaret of Antioch, to whom the church is dedicated, running right round the curving wall, with standing saints and larger scenes among it, and a tall pointed arch was cut through to the sanctuary in the Gothic manner. This was the great age of wall painting in Gemer — the same generation painted the churches at Štítnik and Ochtiná a short way to the south-east — and this small region holds one of the densest concentrations of medieval wall painting in Slovakia.V písomnostiach sa obec prvý raz objavuje v roku 1262 v tvare Sueta — je to fakt o listine, nie o tom, kedy sem prišli ľudia, veď kostol vtedy už dávno stál. Patrila k panstvu Jelšava, najbližšieho mesta. V štrnástom storočí vymaľovali vnútro rotundy: legendu svätej Margity Antiochijskej, ktorej je kostol zasvätený, ako beží dokola po oblej stene, medzi ňou stojace postavy svätcov a väčšie výjavy, a do svätyne prerazili vysoký lomený oblúk podľa gotického vkusu. Bol to veľký vek nástennej maľby v Gemeri — tá istá generácia maľovala kostoly v Štítniku a v Ochtinej kúsok na juhovýchod — a tento malý kraj má jednu z najhustejších koncentrácií stredovekej nástennej maľby na Slovensku.
