Two things happen at Sliač and they have nothing to do with each other. Warm water loaded with dissolved carbon dioxide comes out of a travertine terrace above the Hron, and has been drunk and bathed in for centuries. On the flat ground below, a grass airstrip became the most important airfield of the Slovak National Uprising and is today the base of Slovakia's fighter aircraft.V Sliači sa dejú dve veci a nemajú spolu nič spoločné. Z travertínovej terasy nad Hronom vyviera teplá voda nabitá oxidom uhličitým, ktorú tu ľudia pijú a kúpu sa v nej už stáročia.

Before the kingdomPred kráľovstvom
Finds at Hájniky point to Slavs living on this terrace by about the sixth century, long before there was any kingdom here to belong to. That is not surprising. A place with warm springs, a river full of fish and a broad, well-drained valley floor is exactly where people settle if they are allowed to choose. Nothing was written down for another six hundred years, so what we know about them comes out of the ground rather than out of an archive.Nálezy v Hájnikoch naznačujú, že na tejto terase žili Slovania už okolo šiesteho storočia, dávno predtým, než tu bolo nejaké kráľovstvo, ku ktorému by mohli patriť. Ďalších šesťsto rokov o nich nikto nič nezapísal, takže to, čo vieme, pochádza zo zeme, nie z archívu.
After the Mongol invasion of 1241 Béla IV reorganised the royal estates, and the documents that follow are the first to name the villages here. Rybáre appears in 1249 as part of the Zvolen castle estate; some sources put a first mention as early as 1243 or 1244. The names themselves say what the villagers owed: rybár is a fisherman and hájnik is a gamekeeper. These were service villages — people who kept the king's forest and caught the king's fish, not free farmers with land of their own. Samotné mená hovoria, čo dedinčania kráľovi dlžili: rybár a hájnik. Boli to služobnícke dediny — ľudia, ktorí strážili kráľov les a lovili kráľove ryby, nie slobodní gazdovia s vlastnou pôdou.
The springs were already being used in the thirteenth century. This whole basin was royal hunting country, and in the 1370s King Louis I built the castle at Zvolen, a few kilometres downstream, as a hunting residence in the Italian manner. A court nearby is one reason a local curiosity — water that comes out of the ground warm and fizzing — got noticed and written about at all. Springs that nobody important ever visits tend to stay springs.
In the sixteenth century scholars in the Kingdom of Hungary began cataloguing its mineral waters, and the Sliač springs appear in those accounts. What made them worth writing about is a genuine oddity of chemistry: the water comes out warm and still carries a great deal of dissolved carbon dioxide. Gas normally escapes from water as it warms, so warm-and-strongly-carbonated is rare. Everything the spa does today rests on that one accident of geology.V šestnástom storočí začali učenci v Uhorsku spisovať jeho minerálne vody a sliačske pramene sa v týchto opisoch objavujú.
Organised bathing grew here through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: pools cut and lined at the springs, lodging for guests, and a fixed season in the warm months. In this period a bath was as much a social occasion as a treatment, and the nobility of the surrounding counties came for both. The springs stayed exactly where they had always been; what changed was that somebody was now selling access to them.V sedemnástom a osemnástom storočí sa tu rozvinulo organizované kúpanie: pri prameňoch vytesali a vymurovali bazény, pribudlo ubytovanie pre hostí a ustálila sa sezóna v teplých mesiacoch.
In 1851 the geographer Fényes Elek described Sliač in his gazetteer of Hungary as three bathing pools and four drinking springs — small, but firmly on the map. In 1855 the Habsburg Archduke Albrecht had a chapel dedicated to Saint Hildegard built beside the springs, which tells you what class of visitor the place had begun to attract. A nineteenth-century spa was a business built on reputation, and reputation was built by being able to name the people who came.V roku 1851 opísal geograf Elek Fényes Sliač vo svojom uhorskom miestopise ako tri kúpeľné bazény a štyri pitné pramene — malé, ale pevne na mape.
Under Austria-Hungary the spa became an established one with a season, a park and a clientele that came back year after year. What made that possible was the railway along the Hron between Zvolen and Banská Bystrica, which put the spa within minutes of two towns and within a day of Budapest or Vienna. Spas everywhere in the empire grew in exactly this pattern: the line arrives, and the guest list stops being local. Kúpele v celej monarchii rástli presne podľa tohto vzorca: príde trať a zoznam hostí prestane byť miestny.
Under Czechoslovakia the spa was rebuilt to a modern standard, and the Palace — the large sanatorium that still dominates the terrace — went up on the hill in the 1930s. Down on the level ground by the river something quite different began: the first military aircraft landed at Tri duby on 15 July 1935, and a flying school opened there in May 1936. Both halves of modern Sliač, the spa and the airbase, were in place before the war started.
When the Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944 the airmen of Piešťany flew their aircraft to Tri duby under Captain Ivan Haluzický, and General Jozef Turanec — the officer Bratislava had just appointed to command the army — was seized on this airfield and flown to the Soviet Union. Tri duby became the uprising's main airfield: Soviet transports brought in weapons and ammunition and carried out the wounded. On 17 September 1944 František Fajtl led in the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Fighter Air Regiment from the USSR, flying Soviet La-5FN fighters and operating from here and from nearby Zolná. German aircraft bombed the field that same month.
The uprising was crushed at the end of October 1944 and the fighting went into the mountains as a partisan war. The front reached the Zvolen basin in March 1945 — Zvolen in the middle of the month, Banská Bystrica at its end — and flying restarted at Tri duby on 21 March 1945, when the field was renamed the SNP airfield after the uprising it had served.
After 1948 the spa was nationalised and pointed at one thing: the heart and the circulation. Bathing in carbonated water widens the small blood vessels in the skin and eases the load on the heart, so Sliač became a cardiac rehabilitation centre, which is still its speciality. At the end of the 1950s the villages of Hájniky and Rybáre and the spa settlement between them were merged into one place called Sliač — sources give 1959 or 1960 — and it was made a town in 1969.Po roku 1948 kúpele zoštátnili a zamerali na jedinú vec: na srdce a cievy.
In August 1968 Warsaw Pact armies invaded Czechoslovakia to end the Prague Spring, and Soviet troops then stayed. From 1968 until 1991 the airfield below the spa held a Soviet garrison of several thousand men — a foreign army stationed permanently within sight of a town whose business was rest and recovery. They left what armies leave: between 1992 and 2002 some 90,000 litres of petroleum products were pumped out of the contaminated ground.V auguste 1968 vpadli do Československa vojská Varšavskej zmluvy, aby ukončili Pražskú jar, a sovietske jednotky potom zostali.
The regime fell in November 1989 and the Soviet withdrawal followed; the last troops were gone by 1991. Civil aviation at Sliač was separated from the military side on 1 January 1991 and the field gained international-airport status the same year. Being an airport and a fighter base at once has never been comfortable, and the civil timetable has started and stopped repeatedly ever since.V novembri 1989 padol režim a nasledoval sovietsky odsun; posledné jednotky odišli do roku 1991.
Since 1993 the field has been the home base of the Slovak air force's fighter aircraft: MiG-29s inherited from Czechoslovakia, replaced by American F-16s under a contract signed in 2018. The spa above it goes on treating hearts on health-insurance referrals. The two employers between them define the town, and neither is an ordinary business — one lives on medical contracts, the other on the defence budget. Títo dvaja zamestnávatelia spolu definujú mesto a ani jeden nie je bežným podnikom — jeden žije zo zdravotných zmlúv, druhý z rozpočtu obrany.
