In September 1682 Thököly's kuruc rebels and their Ottoman allies took the castle, and the Ottomans then had both the fortress and the town below it demolished, so that neither could be used against them. Nógrád county's business moved away and did not return. Úradovanie Novohradskej stolice sa presťahovalo inam a už sa nevrátilo. Fiľakovo muselo začať odznova ako obyčajné trhové mestečko, v tieni zrúcaniny, ktorú nemalo ako obnoviť.
