With the frontier pushed back to the south, Fiľakovo became the working centre of Nógrád county: the assembly met here, the archive was kept here, and the castle held the strongest garrison for miles around. For most of a century this small town did the business of a whole county, and the market below the rock lived off the officials, soldiers and carters that business brought. It is the high point of Fiľakovo's history, and it ended abruptly.Keď sa hranica posunula späť na juh, stalo sa Fiľakovo skutočným strediskom Novohradskej stolice: zasadala tu kongregácia, uchovával sa tu archív a hrad držal najsilnejšiu posádku naďaleko.
