The regime fell in November 1989 without a shot fired. The tube works and the bridge factory suddenly had to find western customers instead of guaranteed eastern ones, and Podbrezová became a joint-stock company in 1992. The forest railway at Čierny Balog had been closed in the early 1980s once lorries took the timber; volunteers began rebuilding and running it in the 1990s, which is the only reason it exists today.
