After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the Kingdom of Hungary broke into three pieces and a war frontier settled across what is now southern Slovakia. It never reached the upper Hron: the mountains were too high, the valley too narrow, and there was nothing up here worth a campaign. What the wars did instead was create customers. Armies needed iron, timber, hides and beef, and Brezno's people supplied them — driving cattle down to the markets, floating logs on rafts and beating iron in small water-powered hammer mills in the side valleys.Po osmanskom víťazstve pri Moháči v roku 1526 sa Uhorsko rozpadlo na tri časti a naprieč dnešným južným Slovenskom sa usadila vojnová hranica. Do horného Pohronia nikdy nedosiahla: hory boli privysoké, dolina príliš úzka a nebolo tu nič, pre čo by sa oplatilo viesť ťaženie. Vojny však vytvorili odberateľov. Vojská potrebovali železo, drevo, kože a hovädzie mäso — a Brezňania im ich dodávali: hnali statok dolu dolinou na trhy, plavili klady na pltiach a v bočných dolinách kuli železo v malých vodou poháňaných hámroch.
