On 15 August 1380 King Louis I granted Brezno town privileges. That mattered far more than it sounds. A privilege meant the right to hold a market on a fixed day, to judge your own small disputes and to answer to the king instead of to a private lord. The long square you walk down today is the shape of that permission: it is wide because it had to hold a fair, and every other street in the old town is arranged around it.Pätnásteho augusta 1380 udelil kráľ Ľudovít I. Breznu mestské výsady. Znamenalo to oveľa viac, než sa zdá. Výsada znamenala právo držať trh v určený deň, súdiť si drobné spory a zodpovedať sa kráľovi, nie súkromnému zemepánovi. Dlhé námestie, po ktorom dnes prejdete, je tvarom tohto povolenia: je široké preto, lebo muselo pojať jarmok, a všetky ostatné ulice starého mesta sú usporiadané okolo neho.
