The communist regime treated religious orders as an enemy, and its campaign against them is why the castle spent thirty years closed. On 18 July 1957 Ľupča was assigned to the Catholic charity as a home with room for about two hundred beds, and it became one of a network of "charity homes" into which nuns removed from public life were gathered — places where, as the castle's own history now puts it, they were left to wait for death. The adaptation works of those years were done roughly and changed the character of the building. The number of sisters fell year by year, and on 7 December 1988 the charity's activity at the castle formally ended. The uncomfortable other half of the story is that thirty years of occupation are also why Ľupča still has its roof.Komunistický režim považoval rehole za nepriateľa a jeho ťaženie proti nim je dôvod, prečo bol hrad tridsať rokov zatvorený. 18. júla 1957 pridelili Ľupču katolíckej charite ako domov s kapacitou asi dvesto lôžok a stal sa jedným zo siete „charitných domovov“, do ktorých sústreďovali rehoľnice odstránené z verejného života — miest, kde mali, ako to dnes hovorí vlastná história hradu, čakať na smrť. Vtedajšie adaptácie boli hrubé a povahu stavby zmenili. Počet sestier rok čo rok klesal a 7. decembra 1988 sa činnosť charity na hrade oficiálne skončila. Nepríjemná druhá polovica tohto príbehu je, že práve tých tridsať rokov obývania je dôvod, prečo má Ľupča dodnes strechu.
