The castle's most visible sixteenth-century owner was Pavol Rubigall, a Protestant scholar and humanist who had travelled to Constantinople in 1544 and written a long poem about the journey. He held Ľupča from 1567 to 1575 and strengthened its southern side with a massive tower that still carries his name. Above its Renaissance portal he had cut the date 1573 and his motto — Dominus Deus protector meus, the Lord God is my protector. Below the inscription are three carved portraits: the middle one is almost certainly the only surviving likeness of Rubigall himself, the two beside it his sons. He also rebuilt the parish church in the village below in 1575.Najviditeľnejším majiteľom hradu v 16. storočí bol Pavol Rubigall, protestantský vzdelanec a humanista, ktorý v roku 1544 cestoval do Konštantínopolu a napísal o tej ceste rozsiahlu báseň. Ľupču držal v rokoch 1567 – 1575 a jej južnú stranu spevnil mohutnou vežou, ktorá dodnes nesie jeho meno. Nad jej renesančný portál dal vytesať rok 1573 a svoje heslo — Dominus Deus protector meus, Pán Boh je môj ochranca. Pod nápisom sú tri vytesané portréty: prostredný je takmer isto jediná zachovaná podobizeň samotného Rubigalla, dva po stranách patria jeho synom. V roku 1575 dal prestavať aj farský kostol v obci pod hradom.
