History of RevišteDejiny — Revište

Revište is a small castle on a rock above the Hron, and it exists for one reason: everything Slovakia's mining country produced had to travel down this valley. Silver and gold going out, salt and grain coming in, tax collectors, armies and rafts of timber — all of it passed under this rock. A castle here did not need to be big. It needed to be unavoidable.Revište je malý hrad na skale nad Hronom a existuje z jediného dôvodu: všetko, čo slovenský banský kraj vyprodukoval, muselo prejsť týmto údolím. Striebro a zlato von, soľ a obilie dnu, vyberači daní, vojská, plte s drevom — a všetko popod túto skalu. Hrad tu nemusel byť veľký. Musel byť neobíditeľný.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. second half of the 13th century · named in 1265druhá polovica 13. storočia · zmienka z roku 1265 A castle for the road, not against the MongolsHrad na cestu, nie proti Mongolom

The Mongol invasion of 1241 is the reason Slovakia has stone castles at all: King Béla IV came out of it convinced that only stone on rock was worth building, and pushed the crown and the great families to build. Revište belongs to that wave — a royal castle raised in the second half of the thirteenth century and first named in a document of 1265, although some accounts treat a mention of 1331 as the first secure one. Note what it was not built for. Not to stop an invasion, but to sit on a road: the Hron valley was the artery between the mining towns of central Slovakia and the plain, and its twin castle at Šášov, a short way upstream, did the same job from the other side. Between them the corridor could be watched, and whoever watched it could charge for using it.Vpád Mongolov v roku 1241 je dôvod, prečo má Slovensko kamenné hrady: kráľ Belo IV. z neho vyšiel s presvedčením, že stavať sa oplatí jedine z kameňa a na skale, a tlačil korunu aj veľmožov, aby stavali. Revište patrí do tejto vlny — kráľovský hrad z druhej polovice trinásteho storočia, prvý raz písomne spomenutý v roku 1265, hoci niektoré výklady považujú za prvú istú zmienku až rok 1331.

  2. 1440s · 1467 · 1479štyridsiate roky 15. storočia · 1467 · 1479 Jiskra's men, Corvinus, and a bishopJiskrovi ľudia, Korvín a jeden biskup

In the 1440s the kingdom had an infant king and no working government, and this part of it was held by the Bohemian companies of Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, a captain hired to keep the country for the child. His garrisons sat on the castles all along the Hron, Revište among them, and they were not easy to remove: it took a grown king to do it. Matej Korvín broke the last of the free companies in 1467 and took Revište back into royal hands. In 1479 he granted it to Urban Dóczy, bishop of Eger, and the Dóczy family then held Revište and the town of Žarnovica for nearly two hundred years. That is how a royal castle quietly becomes a family's private property: not by conquest, but by a king paying a servant with something that was not money.V štyridsiatych rokoch pätnásteho storočia mala krajina kráľa-dieťa a nefungujúcu vládu a túto jej časť držali české oddiely Jána Jiskru z Brandýsa, veliteľa najatého, aby ju pre chlapca udržal. Matej Korvín v roku 1467 rozbil posledný tábor bratríkov a Revište vrátil do kráľovských rúk.

  3. the 16th century · 4 August 164716. storočie · 4. august 1647 The screen of castles, and the last DóczyClona hradov a posledný Dóczi

After 1526 the Ottomans took the middle of the kingdom, and the mining towns upstream — whose silver Vienna genuinely could not afford to lose — paid for a screen of strengthened castles across the southern approaches. Revište was one of them, watching the Hron corridor from below; its Gothic core was given Renaissance work to take cannon. The frontier here was not a line on a map but a zone in which anything could happen in any given summer, and raiding parties came a long way north. On 4 August 1647 Ottoman troops took Žarnovica, and Žigmund Dóczy, the last lord of his line, was captured and beheaded. The family died out with him and Revište reverted to the crown — one summer's raid ending two hundred years of ownership. 4. augusta 1647 dobyli Osmani Žarnovicu a Žigmunda Dócziho, posledného pána svojho rodu, zajali a sťali. Rodom sa to skončilo a Revište pripadlo späť korune — jeden letný nájazd ukončil dvesto rokov vlastníctva.

In 1676 Revište passed to the mining chamber at Banská Štiavnica — the royal office that ran the mines — and the chamber kept the castle to the very end. There is a neat circle in that: the castle had been built to protect the silver road, and now the silver administration owned the castle outright. It did not buy peace. Around 1679 the rising of Imrich Thököly damaged the castle badly and it was repaired straight afterwards; then came the long rebellion of Francis II Rákóczi between 1703 and 1711, and castles all along the Hron changed hands again and again. Every one of those turns cost the chamber money to put right, and at some point the sums stopped being worth paying.V roku 1676 prešlo Revište na banskú komoru v Banskej Štiavnici — kráľovský úrad, ktorý spravoval bane — a komora si hrad ponechala až do úplného konca. Je v tom pekný kruh: hrad postavili, aby chránil striebornú cestu, a teraz ho vlastnila samotná správa striebra. Pokoj si tým nekúpila. Okolo roku 1679 hrad ťažko poškodilo povstanie Imricha Thökölyho a hneď nato ho opravili; potom prišlo dlhé povstanie Františka II. Rákócziho v rokoch 1703 – 1711 a hrady po celom Pohroní menili majiteľov znova a znova. Každá taká zmena stála komoru peniaze na opravu — a raz sa tie sumy prestali oplácať.

  5. end of the 18th centurykoniec 18. storočia Soldiers' quarters, and then nothingVojenská ubytovňa a potom nič

Revište's last recorded use was at the end of the eighteenth century, when soldiers were quartered in it. After that its usefulness simply ran out. Artillery had made a castle of this kind pointless as a fortress, the wars in this valley were over, and nobody with money wanted to live halfway up a rock when a comfortable manor house could be built on the flat. Notice what did not happen: no siege, no destruction by the Turks, no dramatic ending. The roofs went first, then the floors, then the upper storeys — a century of rain, and of neighbours helping themselves to dressed stone for their own walls. Some accounts add a fire in the late eighteenth century, but no source names a year for it, and plain abandonment explains what is standing today just as well. Niektoré rozprávania pridávajú aj požiar na sklonku osemnásteho storočia, no rok mu neuvádza nijaký prameň a to, čo dnes stojí, vysvetľuje rovnako dobre aj samotné opustenie.

  6. October 1944 · 21 January 1945október 1944 · 21. január 1945 The valley in the war: Ostrý Grúň and KľakÚdolie vo vojne: Ostrý Grúň a Kľak

The castle had been a ruin for a century and a half and played no part in this war. The valley it was built to watch played a very large one. When the Slovak National Uprising was crushed at the end of October 1944, partisan units kept working out of the forests at the head of the Kľak valley, which comes down to the Hron at Žarnovica just below this rock. The German answer was reprisal against the villages that fed them. On 21 January 1945 a unit called Edelweiss, together with an auxiliary detachment of the local German Heimatschutz, went up that valley and destroyed both villages at its head: at Ostrý Grúň they killed 64 people and burned 128 houses; at Kľak they killed 84, thirty-six of them children, and burned all 132 houses and farm buildings. Memorials stand in both villages and the anniversary is still kept. 21. januára 1945 vyšla dolinou jednotka Edelweiss spolu s pomocným oddielom miestneho nemeckého Heimatschutzu a obe dediny v jej závere zničila: v Ostrom Grúni zabili 64 ľudí a vypálili 128 domov, v Kľaku zabili 84 ľudí, z toho tridsaťšesť detí, a vypálili všetkých 132 domov a hospodárskych stavieb. V oboch obciach stoja pamätníky a výročie sa pripomína dodnes.

  7. since the 1990sod deväťdesiatych rokov Put back up by volunteersZrúcanina, ktorú dvíhajú dobrovoľníci

Revište belongs to the group of Slovak ruins being rescued not by one grand restoration but by sustained volunteer and heritage work, summer after summer. You can read it in the masonry: the old rubble core, older patches, and recent conservation with clean new mortar joints and capped wall-heads that keep water out of the top of a wall. That capping is what is actually holding the castle up — freezing water inside a wall is what pulls ruins apart. The result is visibly better than it was a generation ago, and Revište is one of the easiest big ruins in the country to reach: about twenty minutes up from the village of Revištské Podzámčie, whose name means simply the place under the castle. Výsledok je viditeľne lepší než pred generáciou a Revište patrí k najľahšie dostupným veľkým zrúcaninám u nás: asi dvadsať minút hore z obce Revištské Podzámčie, ktorej meno znamená jednoducho miesto pod hradom.
