The castle had been a ruin for a century and a half and played no part in this war. The valley it was built to watch played a very large one. When the Slovak National Uprising was crushed at the end of October 1944, partisan units kept working out of the forests at the head of the Kľak valley, which comes down to the Hron at Žarnovica just below this rock. The German answer was reprisal against the villages that fed them. On 21 January 1945 a unit called Edelweiss, together with an auxiliary detachment of the local German Heimatschutz, went up that valley and destroyed both villages at its head: at Ostrý Grúň they killed 64 people and burned 128 houses; at Kľak they killed 84, thirty-six of them children, and burned all 132 houses and farm buildings. Memorials stand in both villages and the anniversary is still kept.Hrad bol vtedy už poldruha storočia zrúcaninou a v tejto vojne nezohral nijakú úlohu. Údolie, ktoré mal strážiť, zohralo obrovskú. Keď koncom októbra 1944 potlačili Slovenské národné povstanie, partizánske jednotky ďalej pôsobili z lesov v závere Kľakovskej doliny, ktorá ústi do Hrona pri Žarnovici hneď pod touto skalou. Nemeckou odpoveďou bola odveta voči dedinám, ktoré ich živili. 21. januára 1945 vyšla dolinou jednotka Edelweiss spolu s pomocným oddielom miestneho nemeckého Heimatschutzu a obe dediny v jej závere zničila: v Ostrom Grúni zabili 64 ľudí a vypálili 128 domov, v Kľaku zabili 84 ľudí, z toho tridsaťšesť detí, a vypálili všetkých 132 domov a hospodárskych stavieb. V oboch obciach stoja pamätníky a výročie sa pripomína dodnes.
