Some time in the nineteenth century a rich grave was found at Blatnica: a sword whose grip was sheathed in silver sheet and gilded, spurs, and other fine metalwork buried with a warrior around the year 800. That date is awkward on purpose — it sits exactly on the join between the last years of the Avar khaganate and the first generations of Great Moravia, the Slavic state whose centres were Nitra and Mikulčice. Archaeologists named a whole group of similar finds the Blatnica–Mikulčice horizon after it, and for more than a century they have argued about whose workshops made these things and whose warriors carried them. The objects themselves went to Budapest while this was still the Kingdom of Hungary and are kept in a museum there; the Slovak National Museum shows a copy.Niekedy v 19. storočí sa v Blatnici našiel bohatý hrob: meč s rukoväťou obitou strieborným plechom a pozlátenou, ostrohy a ďalšie jemné kovové predmety, ktoré uložili do zeme s bojovníkom okolo roku 800. Ten dátum je nepohodlný a práve preto zaujímavý — leží presne na rozhraní posledných rokov avarského kaganátu a prvých generácií Veľkej Moravy, slovanského štátu s centrami v Nitre a v Mikulčiciach. Podľa tohto nálezu pomenovali archeológovia celú skupinu podobných pamiatok blatnicko-mikulčický horizont a už vyše storočia sa dohadujú, v čích dielňach vznikli a čí bojovníci ich nosili. Samotné predmety sa ešte za Uhorska dostali do Budapešti a sú tam v múzeu dodnes; Slovenské národné múzeum vystavuje kópiu.
