Blatnica stands on the eastern edge of the Turiec basin at the foot of the Veľká Fatra, about fifteen kilometres south of Martin. Two limestone valleys open in the mountain wall directly behind it — the Gaderská dolina and the shorter Blatnická dolina — divided by the twin bulk of Tlstá and Ostrá, and the village sits exactly where they come out into open country.Blatnica stojí na východnom okraji Turčianskej kotliny na úpätí Veľkej Fatry, asi pätnásť kilometrov južne od Martina. A valley mouth is a valuable place, and this one has been occupied for a very long time. The valleys behind give grazing, timber and water, the basin in front fields and a road, and the rock spur above a view over the whole of Turiec — which is where the castle went. Blatnica Castle was built in the thirteenth century to watch the route, was held for centuries by the Révay family who ran the county from Sklabiňa, and has long been a ruin.Ústie doliny je cenné miesto a toto konkrétne je osídlené veľmi dlho. Blatnica's other claim is archaeological, and it is a large one. A rich grave find made here in the nineteenth century — an ornamented sword with gilded mounts, spurs and other fine metalwork of around the year 800 — was important enough that specialists named a whole class of material after it. The Blatnica–Mikulčice horizon sits at the join between the late Avar period and the beginnings of Great Moravia, and how to read it has been argued over for a century. The Gaderská dolina is the main event and it begins at the edge of the village: a limestone canyon closed to traffic at a barrier, so the whole length is walked or cycled between rock walls, meadow clearings and a clear stream. In the village, a classicist manor house holds the Karol Plicka museum. Around the manor, the older core of the village keeps its log houses on stone footings, its gates and its barns, protected as historic ground though not as strictly as Vlkolínec. Blatnica is an ordinary Turiec village that happens to be a trailhead, and its visitor pressure is in the valley rather than in the street. On a fine summer weekend the parking at the valley mouth runs out early; cars go no further than the barrier, which is what keeps the Gaderská worth walking.Blatnica je bežnou turčianskou obcou, ktorá je zhodou okolností východiskom túr, a návštevnícky tlak je v doline, nie na ulici. The museum's opening is seasonal, the castle is unstaffed and unticketed with a path that is steep and loose in places, and the valleys are national park, where the marked route is the route. Buses run from Martin and from Turčianske Teplice; the railway through the Turiec basin passes a few kilometres west of the village, so most arrivals finish by bus or car.
