The first written record of Blatnica Castle is from 1300, when it was held by Peter of Brezovica — a fact about a document, not about when the first stone was laid. Afterwards the crown took the castle, and through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it passed through the hands of men who were powerful in the north, among them the Pongrác family of Svätý Mikuláš in Liptov and Peter Komorovský. A castle at a valley mouth was not a summer house: it watched the road along the eastern edge of the Turiec basin and the two valleys behind it. The village below lived as the tenants of whoever held the rock.Prvá písomná zmienka o Blatnickom hrade je z roku 1300, keď ho držal Peter z Brezovice — to je však údaj o listine, nie o tom, kedy položili prvý kameň. Potom hrad pripadol kráľovi a v 15. a 16. storočí prechádzal cez ruky mocných pánov severu, medzi nimi Pongrácovcov zo Svätého Mikuláša v Liptove a Petra Komorovského. Hrad pri ústí doliny nebol letným sídlom: strážil cestu po východnom okraji Turčianskej kotliny aj obe doliny za ňou. Dedina pod ním žila ako poddanská osada toho, kto práve držal bralo.
