The first time the name appears in writing is in 1313, in a document about church tithes, spelt Zereth. That is a fact about a piece of parchment and not about when people arrived: the fortification under the manor house is three centuries older than the word. In the later Middle Ages a water castle stood here — a castle defended not by a hill but by ditches and river arms — and the excavations of 1981 to 1992 found its walls under today's building. It is usually identified with Sempte, in Slovak Šintava, the castle that gave its name to the whole lordship on both banks; the classicist manor house standing on those foundations dates from about 1840.Prvý raz je meno zapísané roku 1313, v listine o cirkevných desiatkoch, a to v podobe Zereth. Je to údaj o pergamene, nie o tom, odkedy tu ľudia žijú: opevnenie pod kaštieľom je o tri storočia staršie ako to slovo. V neskorom stredoveku tu stál vodný hrad, teda hrad chránený nie kopcom, ale priekopami a ramenami rieky; jeho múry našiel archeologický výskum v rokoch 1981 – 1992 pod dnešnou budovou. Býva stotožňovaný so Šintavou (po latinsky a maďarsky Sempte), hradom, podľa ktorého sa volalo celé panstvo na oboch brehoch. Klasicistický kaštieľ, ktorý na jeho základoch stojí, je z čias okolo roku 1840.
