What made Sereď was a shallow place in the Váh. Slovak accounts say the army of Emperor Henry IV crossed the river here in 1074, and by 1252 there is a record of a bridge and of a place where timber was moved from land to water. Excavation under the manor house in the middle of the town found traces of a fortification guarding the ford as early as the tenth century — somebody has been collecting a toll on this spot for a thousand years. The old Bohemian road from Buda to Prague ran along this bank, and rafts came down the Váh carrying salt from Poland, which is why the town kept a large salt store.Za všetkým je brod — plytké miesto na Váhu. Slovenské pramene uvádzajú, že tadiaľto roku 1074 prešlo vojsko cisára Henricha IV., a k roku 1252 sa spomína most cez rieku aj prekladisko dreva. Výskum pod kaštieľom v strede mesta našiel stopy opevnenia, ktoré strážilo brod už v desiatom storočí — mýto sa teda na tomto mieste vyberá vyše tisíc rokov. Popri tomto brehu viedla stará česká cesta z Budína do Prahy a po Váhu splavovali plte so soľou z Poľska, pre ktorú v meste stál veľký soľný sklad.
