Sereď stands on the Váh about twenty kilometres south-east of Trnava, at the point where the road from the city crosses the river on its way into the lowland. The crossing is what made the place. Under socialism the town was rebuilt around heavy industry. The Esterházy manor house and its landscape park sit in the centre of the town, on the site of the medieval water castle. The smelter's site became an industrial park, and employment now comes from logistics, engineering and manufacturing on it and around it.
