History of PrievidzaDejiny — Prievidza

Prievidza is the market town that ended up running a coalfield. For eight centuries it was a small place on the upper Nitra, living off the fairs it held for the villages of the basin and off the Piarist school on its square. Then, in the twentieth century, brown coal was dug all around it at Handlová, Nováky and Cígeľ, and the town became the offices, the railhead and the housing estates of the whole industry. The mines have closed, and Prievidza is now the largest town in Slovakia having to answer the question of what a coal district does next.

  1. 11131113 Written down at ZoborZapísaná v Zoborskej listine

Prievidza first appears in writing in 1113, in the great property charter of the Benedictine abbey on Zobor hill above Nitra, where it is spelled Preuigan. The same document names Bojnice and Nováky, so all three places in this basin step into the written record on one page of parchment. That is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived: farmers had been working the flat land along the upper Nitra long before a monk listed it. What the charter does show is that by 1113 the basin was settled enough, and profitable enough, for a monastery two days' walk away to want its dues written down.

  2. 26 January 138326. januára 1383 Queen Mary gives the town its rightsKráľovná Mária dáva mestu výsady

On 26 January 1383 a charter issued in the name of Queen Mary — then a child of about eleven, ruling alongside her mother — gave Prievidza the rights that make a town out of a village. It could hold markets, choose its own mayor and its own priest, build mills, fish the river, sell freely what its craftsmen made, and collect tolls. None of that is decoration: a market meant the villages of the whole basin had to come here to buy and sell, and a toll meant some of the money passing through stayed in the town. The long wide square you walk down today is the shape of that privilege, laid out so that fairs could stand in the middle of it.26. januára 1383 dostala Prievidza listinou vydanou v mene kráľovnej Márie — vtedy asi jedenásťročného dievčaťa, ktoré vládlo spolu s matkou — výsady, ktoré z dediny robia mesto.

  3. 16th century – 159916. storočie – 1599 The Thurzós, and the raid of 1599Turzovci a nájazd z roku 1599

Through the sixteenth century the neighbouring Bojnice estate — and with it much of the basin's life — was held by the Thurzó family, magnates and mining entrepreneurs who kept it until the first third of the seventeenth century. The Ottoman frontier itself never reached the upper Nitra, but raiding parties did: in 1599 one came up the valley from the south and burned Prievidza along with other towns of the upper Nitra. That is the distinction worth remembering — the frontier ran far to the south, yet a fast column could ride two or three days beyond it and leave a market town in ashes. Most towns here did not resist such a raid; they did what Prievidza did, and built again.V 16. storočí držali susedné bojnické panstvo — a s ním veľkú časť života v kotline — Turzovci, magnáti a banskí podnikatelia, ktorým panstvo patrilo do prvej tretiny 17. storočia.

  4. 1666 and 16731666 a 1673 Burned again, this time in the kuruc warsDruhý požiar, tentoraz v kuruckých vojnách

The wars that followed were not fought against the Turks but against the Habsburg emperor. Hungarian noblemen and their soldiers — the kuruci, the anti-Habsburg insurgents — fought imperial armies up and down this country for the best part of fifty years, and towns changed hands with whoever happened to be passing. Prievidza burned again in 1673, and part of its town archive burned with it, which is one reason we know less about its Middle Ages than we should. Only seven years earlier the Piarist teaching order had arrived in the town, so the school and the fire belong to the same generation.

  5. 1666 – 1780s1666 – 80. roky 18. storočia The Piarist college and the Baroque churchPiaristické kolégium a barokový kostol

The Piarists — a teaching order that ran free schools for boys — came to Prievidza in 1666 at the invitation of the Pálffys, who by then held the Bojnice estate. Their college turned a market town into the school town of the whole upper Nitra: for two centuries, a bright boy from a village in this basin was sent here. The Baroque Church of the Holy Trinity beside it was begun to an Italian design and finished in the middle of the eighteenth century, and it is still the best building in Prievidza. Coal was already recorded in the hills at Handlová by 1784, but nobody could yet move it, so the town went on living off what it always had: fairs, crafts and the school. Barokový Kostol Najsvätejšej Trojice vedľa školy začali stavať podľa talianskeho návrhu a dokončili v polovici 18. storočia; dodnes je to najlepšia stavba v Prievidzi.

  6. 1870 – 19131870 – 1913 A small town and the first railsMalé mesto a prvé koľajnice

Under Austria-Hungary Prievidza stayed small: 2,719 people in 1870, a district town of craftsmen, priests and schoolmasters. What changed everything was the railway. The line up the Nitra valley reached the town before the First World War, and on 15 February 1913 it was pushed on east to Handlová, where industrial coal mining had begun in 1909. From that moment the coal of the basin could leave it — and the town where the lines met became the place where the whole coalfield did its business.V Rakúsko-Uhorsku ostala Prievidza malá: v roku 1870 mala 2 719 obyvateľov a bola okresným mestečkom remeselníkov, kňazov a učiteľov. Zmenila to železnica.

  7. 1918 – 19381918 – 1938 A Czechoslovak district townOkresné mesto v Československu

In 1918 the Kingdom of Hungary ended and the basin woke up in Czechoslovakia; the schools and the officials changed, the fairs did not. Between the wars Prievidza was still a modest place of a few thousand people — smaller, in fact, than the mining town at Handlová, which had 10,442 inhabitants by 1930. The growth was in coal, and the district seat lived by administering it. In 1931 a railway was driven east out of Handlová through a tunnel of more than three kilometres towards the Turiec valley, tying the basin's coal into the network of the whole republic.V roku 1918 sa skončilo Uhorsko a kotlina sa zobudila v Československu: zmenili sa školy aj úradníci, jarmoky nie.

  8. 1939 – 4 April 19451939 – 4. apríl 1945 The Slovak State, and the UprisingSlovenský štát a povstanie

From March 1939 this was the Slovak State, a country allied to Nazi Germany. The upper Nitra became one of the centres of armed resistance: a partisan group formed in the Vtáčnik hills above the basin, and when the Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 this district was in insurgent hands. German troops took the basin back that autumn, and the Upper Nitra Partisan Brigade, formed in the mountains, went on cutting the lines — it blew up the Prievidza–Handlová railway on 15 October 1944. Prievidza itself was taken by troops of the Soviet 40th Army on 4 April 1945.Od marca 1939 tu bol Slovenský štát, krajina spojená s nacistickým Nemeckom.

  9. 1948 – 19891948 – 1989 The capital of the coal basinHlavné mesto uhoľného revíru

After 1948 the mines, the works and the shops all belonged to the state, and the state decided that the upper Nitra would burn its lignite for electricity. Coal was dug at Handlová, Nováky and Cígeľ, the power station at Nováky burned it, and Prievidza was where the industry's offices, schools and hospital stood and where its people lived. The town grew from about five thousand inhabitants to more than fifty thousand, and the housing estates built around the old square from the 1960s are that growth made visible. It was the fastest change in the town's history, and it was decided somewhere else.

  10. November 1989 onwardsod novembra 1989 The plan endsKoniec plánu

In November 1989 the communist regime fell, and with it the certainty that whatever the basin dug, the state would buy. The mines and the chemical works at Nováky had been built for a planned economy that no longer existed, and everything that has happened in the upper Nitra since is an argument about how long to keep them running and at whose cost. Prievidza, as the district's administrative centre, spent the next thirty years managing a decline it had not caused. New employers did come — mechatronics for cars, food processing — but never on the scale of the pits.V novembri 1989 padol komunistický režim a s ním aj istota, že čokoľvek kotlina vykope, štát kúpi.

  11. 1993 – 20231993 – 2023 After the coalPo uhlí

Slovakia became independent on 1 January 1993, and the coal question came with it. At the end of 2023 the state stopped paying for electricity made from domestic lignite, the power station stopped burning it, and on 20 December 2023 the last coal was cut at the Nováky mine — the end of brown-coal mining in Slovakia. A state transformation programme for the upper Nitra pays for retraining, an industrial park and new jobs; Brose makes door and seat mechatronics for cars in Prievidza, Nestlé runs a food plant on the edge of town, and Bojnice next door lives off its château and its zoo. Whether all of that adds up to what a coalfield employing thousands used to pay is the argument the district is still having.Slovensko sa 1. januára 1993 osamostatnilo a otázka uhlia išla s ním. Koncom roka 2023 štát prestal platiť elektrinu vyrobenú z domáceho hnedého uhlia, elektráreň ho prestala páliť a 20. decembra 2023 vyfárali z Bane Nováky posledné uhlie — koniec hnedouhoľného baníctva na Slovensku. Štátny program transformácie hornej Nitry platí rekvalifikácie, priemyselný park a nové pracovné miesta; Brose vyrába v Prievidzi mechatroniku dverí a sedadiel, Nestlé má na okraji mesta potravinársky závod a susedné Bojnice žijú zo zámku a zoo. Či to dokopy nahradí to, čo platil revír zamestnávajúci tisíce ľudí, je spor, ktorý okres vedie dodnes.
