Through the sixteenth century the neighbouring Bojnice estate — and with it much of the basin's life — was held by the Thurzó family, magnates and mining entrepreneurs who kept it until the first third of the seventeenth century. The Ottoman frontier itself never reached the upper Nitra, but raiding parties did: in 1599 one came up the valley from the south and burned Prievidza along with other towns of the upper Nitra. That is the distinction worth remembering — the frontier ran far to the south, yet a fast column could ride two or three days beyond it and leave a market town in ashes. Most towns here did not resist such a raid; they did what Prievidza did, and built again.V 16. storočí držali susedné bojnické panstvo — a s ním veľkú časť života v kotline — Turzovci, magnáti a banskí podnikatelia, ktorým panstvo patrilo do prvej tretiny 17. storočia. Osmanská hranica po hornú Nitru nikdy nesiahala, nájazdy áno: v roku 1599 sa jeden oddiel dostal dolinou od juhu a Prievidzu spolu s ďalšími mestečkami hornej Nitry vypálil. Práve tento rozdiel si treba zapamätať — hranica ležala ďaleko na juhu, ale rýchly jazdecký oddiel mohol prejsť dva-tri dni za ňu a nechať po sebe vypálené trhové mesto. Väčšina mestečiek sa takému nájazdu nebránila; robili to, čo Prievidza — stavali znova.
