Prievidza lies on the upper Nitra in a broad basin closed by the Strážov Hills to the west and north and by the Vtáčnik, a volcanic range, to the east and south. It is the largest town of Upper Nitra and the natural centre of the whole basin, roughly an hour's drive east of Trenčín over the hills, and connected south down the Nitra valley through Partizánske to Topoľčany.Prievidza leží na hornom toku Nitry v širokej kotline, ktorú na západe a severe uzatvárajú Strážovské vrchy a na východe a juhu sopečný Vtáčnik. The storyHistória
The town is first recorded in the twelfth century and was granted town privileges in the Middle Ages, growing as the market for the villages of the basin under the shadow of the Bojnice lordship next door. Its street plan still shows a long market square with the church at one end.Mesto sa prvýkrát spomína v 12. storočí a mestské výsady získalo v stredoveku; rástlo ako trh pre dediny kotliny v tieni susedného bojnického panstva. The Piarists came to Prievidza in the seventeenth century, invited and endowed by the Pálffy family, and built a church and a college here. That made a small market town into a school town for the whole of Upper Nitra, and the Baroque complex on the square is still its finest architecture.V 17. storočí prišli do Prievidze piaristi, pozvaní a obdarovaní Pálfiovcami, a postavili tu kostol a kolégium. Z malého trhového mestečka sa tak stalo školské mesto pre celú Hornú Nitru a barokový areál na námestí je dodnes jeho najlepšou architektúrou.
The twentieth century changed the scale completely. Brown coal was mined at Handlová, Nováky and Cígeľ, the chemical works and the power station at Nováky burned and processed it, and Prievidza became the administrative and residential centre of the coalfield, with large housing estates built around the old core from the 1960s.Dvadsiate storočie zmenilo mierku úplne. The town's most famous neighbour is not in the town: Bojnice, with its château, spa and zoo, is next door and has its own pages here. Coal was the district's living for the best part of a century and is no longer. Mining in the basin has wound down, the power station no longer burns local lignite for subsidised electricity, and Upper Nitra has been through a state-backed transformation programme intended to replace those jobs. It is the defining local issue of the decade.Uhlie bolo živobytím okresu takmer celé storočie a už ním nie je. Ťažba v kotline sa skončila, elektráreň už nespaľuje domáci lignit na dotovanú elektrinu a Horná Nitra prešla štátom podporeným transformačným programom, ktorý mal tie pracovné miesta nahradiť. What is left and what is new sit side by side: Brose builds door and seat mechatronics for cars in Prievidza, Nestlé runs a food plant on the edge of town, and engineering, food processing and services fill in around them. Prievidza is the terminus of the railway that runs up the Nitra valley from Topoľčany and Partizánske, and a second line climbs east through Handlová and a long tunnel towards the Turiec valley. Buses connect it with Trenčín, Žilina, Nitra and Banská Bystrica, and run to Bojnice constantly.Prievidza je konečnou stanicou trate, ktorá prichádza dolinou Nitry od Topoľčian a Partizánskeho, a druhá trať stúpa na východ cez Handlovú a dlhý tunel smerom do Turca. Autobusy ju spájajú s Trenčínom, Žilinou, Nitrou a Banskou Bystricou a do Bojníc premávajú neustále.
