The uprisingsPovstania
PrievidzaPrievidza
The wars that followed were not fought against the Turks but against the Habsburg emperor. Hungarian noblemen and their soldiers — the kuruci, the anti-Habsburg insurgents — fought imperial armies up and down this country for the best part of fifty years, and towns changed hands with whoever happened to be passing. Prievidza burned again in 1673, and part of its town archive burned with it, which is one reason we know less about its Middle Ages than we should. Only seven years earlier the Piarist teaching order had arrived in the town, so the school and the fire belong to the same generation.
