Under Austria-Hungary Prievidza stayed small: 2,719 people in 1870, a district town of craftsmen, priests and schoolmasters. What changed everything was the railway. The line up the Nitra valley reached the town before the First World War, and on 15 February 1913 it was pushed on east to Handlová, where industrial coal mining had begun in 1909. From that moment the coal of the basin could leave it — and the town where the lines met became the place where the whole coalfield did its business.V Rakúsko-Uhorsku ostala Prievidza malá: v roku 1870 mala 2 719 obyvateľov a bola okresným mestečkom remeselníkov, kňazov a učiteľov. Zmenila to železnica. Trať dolinou Nitry sem prišla ešte pred prvou svetovou vojnou a 15. februára 1913 ju predĺžili na východ do Handlovej, kde sa v roku 1909 rozbehla priemyselná ťažba uhlia. Od tej chvíle mohlo uhlie z kotliny odchádzať — a mesto, kde sa trate stretávali, sa stalo miestom, kde celý revír vybavoval svoje veci.
