The men of the Kopanice were conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian army like everyone else, and they died on the Galician and Italian fronts for a state that would not survive the war. Meanwhile a man born ten kilometres from Myjava was working to bring that state down. Milan Rastislav Štefánik, born in 1880 at Košariská, the son of the Lutheran pastor there, had become an astronomer and then a French citizen and airman; during the war he helped organise the Czechoslovak legions out of prisoners and émigrés and, with Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and Edvard Beneš, argued the Allies into recognising a Czechoslovak state.
