After the Hungarian army was destroyed at Mohács in 1526 the kingdom broke into three parts and the Ottoman frontier moved north. Beckov stood far behind that frontier, but raiding parties travelled much further than armies did, so the Bánffys rebuilt it as a Renaissance residence that could still fight: in the middle of the sixteenth century new walls went up against what the records call the Turkish danger, and a cannon tower was added in the lower courtyard. János Bánffy was killed fighting the Ottomans in 1595. In 1599 a raiding force of Ottoman and Tatar horsemen came up the Váh valley and was beaten off from this rock — one of the few occasions when Beckov's defences were used for exactly what they had been built for. Roku 1599 vytiahol povážskou dolinou nájazd osmanských a tatárskych jazdcov a od tohto brala ho odrazili — jeden z mála prípadov, keď beckovské opevnenie naozaj poslúžilo tomu, načo ho postavili.
