At the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries Beckov fell to Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the oligarch who ran the north-west of the kingdom as though it were his own state, and he strengthened it. When he died in 1321 the castle went back to the crown and was run by castellans — paid officers who held a castle for its owner instead of owning it themselves. In 1379 King Louis I gave Beckov to Miklós Bánffy as a reward for military service. Within ten years it had changed hands again, and that is when the castle's great age begins.Na prelome trinásteho a štrnásteho storočia sa Beckov dostal do rúk Matúša Čáka Trenčianskeho, oligarchu, ktorý spravoval severozápad kráľovstva ako vlastný štát, a ten hrad posilnil. Po jeho smrti roku 1321 sa hrad vrátil kráľovi a spravovali ho kasteláni — platení správcovia, ktorí hrad držali za majiteľa, no sami ho nevlastnili. V roku 1379 daroval kráľ Ľudovít I. Beckov Mikulášovi Bánfimu ako odmenu za vojenskú službu. O necelých desať rokov hrad zmenil majiteľa znova — a práve vtedy sa začína jeho veľké obdobie.
