The rock was fortified long before anyone built in stone on it. In the early Kingdom of Hungary this was frontier country — the western edge of the kingdom, watched by a chain of guard posts strung along the Váh — and the place turns up in the oldest records under the name Blundix, also written Blundus or Bolondos. The chronicle known as Anonymus, written around 1200, already speaks of the castle here as an old one. The settlement below it is first mentioned in writing in 1208, which is a fact about a surviving document and not about when people arrived: they were living under this rock long before any clerk wrote the name down.Bralo bolo opevnené dávno predtým, než naň niekto postavil čokoľvek z kameňa.
