1687 The castle burns, and the county leavesHrad zhorí a stolica odchádza

The seventeenth century in this part of the kingdom was one anti-Habsburg rising after another, and the castle above the town was a garrison through most of it. Then it burned. The tradition is that in 1687 lightning reached the powder store and the explosion wrecked what was left; sources disagree about the exact year and about the cause, but not about the result. Nobody rebuilt it. The county administration moved down the valley to Prešov, and Veľký Šariš — the head of a county, the place that gave Šariš its name — became an ordinary market town beside a much bigger neighbour. Almost everything about the modern town follows from that one decision not to rebuild.Sedemnáste storočie znamenalo v tomto kúte kráľovstva jedno protihabsburské povstanie za druhým a hrad nad mestom bol po väčšinu času posádkovou pevnosťou. Potom zhorel. Tradícia hovorí, že v roku 1687 zasiahol blesk prachárňu a výbuch zničil, čo ešte stálo; pramene sa rozchádzajú v presnom roku aj v príčine, no nie vo výsledku. Nikto hrad neobnovil. Stoličná správa sa presťahovala dolu údolím do Prešova a Veľký Šariš — hlava stolice, miesto, ktoré dalo Šarišu meno — sa stal obyčajným trhovým mestečkom vedľa oveľa väčšieho suseda. Takmer všetko na dnešnom meste vyplýva z toho jediného rozhodnutia hrad neobnoviť.
