Veľký Šariš stands on the Torysa about six kilometres north-west of Prešov, where the river's flat floodplain narrows between low hills. One landmark is unmistakable: a steep isolated hill of volcanic rock rises directly behind the town, flat-topped and wooded, with the walls of Šariš Castle running around its summit.Veľký Šariš leží na Toryse asi šesť kilometrov severozápadne od Prešova, tam, kde sa rovná niva rieky zužuje medzi nízkymi kopcami. Close as it is to the regional capital, the town has not been swallowed by it. It keeps its own centre, its own name — Šariš, the name of the whole historic county, comes from this hill — and an industrial edge that most commuter towns do not have.Napriek blízkosti krajského mesta ho Prešov nepohltil. The storyHistória
The castle came first and everything else followed. Built from the thirteenth century on the volcanic hill, it became the seat of Šariš county and one of the largest fortified sites in the kingdom, and the settlement below existed to supply and serve it. The town's market rights and its early standing were entirely a function of what stood overhead.Najprv bol hrad a všetko ostatné prišlo po ňom. Od 13. storočia rástol na sopečnom vrchu, stal sa sídlom Šarišskej stolice a jedným z najrozsiahlejších opevnených areálov v krajine a osada pod ním existovala preto, aby ho zásobovala a obsluhovala. The castle's working life ended abruptly in 1687, when fire reached its powder store and the explosion wrecked it. It was never rebuilt, county business moved down to Prešov, and what follows is the history of an ordinary agricultural market town in the shadow of a much larger neighbour. What made the modern town was the brewery. It was built in the 1960s on the flat ground beside the river and grew into the largest brewing plant in the country; the beer took the name of the county, Šariš, and made it familiar across Slovakia. A town of a few thousand people ended up with an industry of national scale on its doorstep.Novodobú podobu mesta určil pivovar. What to seeČo vidieť
The climb to the castle is why most visitors stop. A marked path goes up through the forest from the town in something under an hour, and what waits at the top is not a museum but an enormous open circuit of walls — some of it standing high, much of it grassed-over footings — with the Šariš basin spread out below. There is no ticket desk, no roof and no shelter, so go up equipped for a hill walk.Väčšina návštevníkov tu zastaví kvôli výstupu na hrad. In the town itself there is a medieval parish church, much altered over the centuries, a modest square, and the river. An asphalt cycle path runs roughly ten kilometres along the Torysa from Prešov and ends under the castle hill; it is the pleasantest way to arrive from the city and it keeps off the main road the whole way.V samotnom meste je stredoveký, v priebehu storočí mnohokrát prestavaný farský kostol, skromné námestie a rieka. The brewery is a working plant, not an attraction, though its buildings define one side of the town. Prešov's long old-town square is fifteen minutes away, and the Šariš countryside north towards Sabinov has small Gothic churches, with the wooden Greek Catholic churches of the north-east further out again.Pivovar je fungujúci závod, nie atrakcia, hoci jeho budovy určujú jednu stranu mesta. Work and industryPráca a priemysel
The brewery is the defining employer and the biggest brewing plant in the country by output. It belongs today to the Plzeňský Prazdroj group, having traded before that under the Topvar company, and bottling, warehousing and haulage go with it.Pivovar je určujúcim zamestnávateľom a objemom výroby najväčším pivovarským závodom v krajine. Veľký Šariš has a station on the railway running north-west out of Prešov towards Sabinov and Lipany, and the journey from the city takes only a few minutes; buses are frequent on the same route.
