In 1868 a museum was placed in the burnt-out castle — the beginning of the Orava Museum, one of the oldest in Slovakia, and the moment the building stopped being an abandoned shell. Collecting the region's own history was, in the 1860s, a quietly political act: this was the decade in which Matica slovenská was founded at Martin, and a regional museum was another way of saying that Orava had a past of its own worth keeping. Between 1906 and 1912 Jozef Pálffy restored the middle part of the castle, putting roofs back on the Thurzó ranges. From then on the village had two things to live from instead of one: the estate, and visitors.V roku 1868 umiestnili do vyhoreného hradu múzeum — začiatok Oravského múzea, jedného z najstarších na Slovensku, a chvíľu, keď stavba prestala byť opustenou škrupinou. Zbierať dejiny vlastného kraja bol v šesťdesiatych rokoch 19. storočia potichu politický čin: v tom istom desaťročí vznikla v Martine Matica slovenská a krajové múzeum bolo ďalším spôsobom, ako povedať, že Orava má vlastnú minulosť, ktorú sa oplatí uchovať. V rokoch 1906 až 1912 dal Jozef Pálfi obnoviť strednú časť hradu a vrátil strechy na turzovské krídla. Odvtedy mala dedina namiesto jedného zdroja obživy dva: panstvo a návštevníkov.
