Orava county's business had been drifting down the valley to Dolný Kubín since 1683, and in 1726 the move was settled for good when the Composessorate provided ground there for a county house. The castle kept its name in the administration — one of the four districts the county was divided into in 1777 was still called the Castle district — but the clerks had gone. Then in 1800 a fire, most probably from a spark out of a chimney, went through the whole complex and burned it out. The castle stood empty and roofless for most of the nineteenth century, and the village went on living off the estate's forests and sawmills without the fortress above it doing anything at all.Oravská stolica sa už od roku 1683 pomaly sťahovala dolinou nadol do Dolného Kubína a v roku 1726 sa presun uzavrel definitívne, keď tam komposesorát venoval pozemok na stoličný dom. Hrad si podržal meno aspoň v úradných papieroch — jeden zo štyroch okresov, na ktoré sa stolica v roku 1777 rozdelila, sa stále volal Hradný — ale pisári boli preč. Potom v roku 1800 prešiel celým areálom požiar, najpravdepodobnejšie od iskry z komína, a vypálil ho. Hrad stál prázdny a bez striech väčšinu 19. storočia a dedina žila ďalej z panských lesov a píl, kým pevnosť nad ňou nerobila vôbec nič.
