By the eighteenth century nobody was going to besiege this rock. The castle worked as an office: the composesorate's administration, its archive, its stores, the paperwork of a valley. Then in 1800 a fire broke out — a spark from a chimney, in the usual account — and destroyed the wooden parts of the whole stack, from the citadel down. It is the greatest disaster in the castle's history, and it is why so much of what you see inside is nineteenth- and twentieth-century work standing on older walls. The castle was repaired rather than abandoned, and the reason is the same reason it survives at all: the estate still needed the building, so the estate paid for the roofs.V 18. storočí už toto bralo nikto obliehať nešiel. Hrad opravili, neopustili ho, a to z toho istého dôvodu, pre ktorý vôbec stojí: panstvo budovu naďalej potrebovalo, teda panstvo platilo strechy.
