In 1534 Ján z Dubovca obtained the castle together with the office of county count, and spent the next decade rebuilding it. He added round bastions — thick, low, curved gun positions of the kind that had just become necessary — and a five-storey palace. The reason is simple and it applies to castles all over Europe in this century: a fortress designed against arrows and scaling ladders does not survive artillery. High thin walls catch cannonballs; low round ones deflect them and carry your own guns.
