From 1441 the castellan here was Peter Komorovský, from a family on the Polish side of the mountains, and the Komorovskýs held Orava and neighbouring Liptov through the disorderly middle of the fifteenth century — when the king was a child, armed companies ran whole regions on their own account, and a determined man with soldiers could simply keep whatever he was holding. Matthias Corvinus spent his reign putting such men out of business, and the castle came back under royal control. After 1474 a new block and a residential wing were built in the middle castle. It is the first clear step in the change that runs through the whole rest of the castle's story: a fortress slowly turning into somewhere people actually wanted to live.Od roku 1441 tu bol kastelánom Peter Komorovský z rodu na poľskej strane hôr a Komorovskovci držali Oravu aj susedný Liptov cez nepokojnú polovicu 15. storočia — keď bol kráľ dieťaťom, ozbrojené skupiny spravovali celé kraje na vlastný účet a odhodlaný muž s vojskom si jednoducho nechal, čo držal. Matej Korvín strávil vládu tým, že takýchto ľudí odstavoval, a hrad sa vrátil pod kráľovskú moc. Po roku 1474 pribudol v strednom hrade nový trakt s obytným krídlom. Je to prvý zreteľný krok premeny, ktorá potiahne celý zvyšok príbehu hradu: pevnosť sa pomaly mení na miesto, kde niekto naozaj chcel bývať.
