History of Nitrianska BlatnicaDejiny — Nitrianska Blatnica

The village is down on the flat; its history is up on the hill behind it. A small round church in the forest, argued over by archaeologists for fifty years, is one of the oldest buildings in Slovakia — and the story of the village is largely the story of people climbing up to it, giving up on it, and climbing up again.

Great MoraviaVeľká Morava

  1. from the mid-9th centuryod polovice 9. storočia A round church and a lord's courtOkrúhly kostolík a veľmožský dvorec

Excavations on the slope above the village, led by the archaeologist Alexander Ruttkay between 1974 and 1980, showed that people had lived around the rotunda of St George from about the middle of the ninth century — the time of Great Moravia. Two fortified courts of a local lord stood one after the other in the meadow called Púsť beside the church, and the settlement around them worked iron and burned tar. The dig began by accident: workmen fitting a lightning conductor turned up human bones. Ruttkay compared the rotunda's size and plan with the Great Moravian rotunda at the fortified court of Ducové, on the far side of this same range, and with Mikulčice in Moravia; the hillfort of Bojná, the richest Great Moravian find of recent decades, lies a few kilometres away along the same wooded flank.

  2. 11th century; first mention 118511. storočie; prvá zmienka 1185 How old is it? Nobody agreesAká je stará? Nikto sa nezhodne

The dating of the rotunda is the most argued-over question in the earliest architecture of Slovakia. Ruttkay's excavation put the standing building in the early eleventh century while not excluding something older; a study published in 2012, resting on what the restoration work uncovered, argued that the whole building belongs to the first third of the ninth century; more recent opinion tends to place it somewhere between the end of the ninth and the second half of the tenth. Objects of the eleventh century were found in the graves around it, so the church was certainly in use by then. The village itself first appears in writing in 1185 as Sarfew — Hungarian Sárfő, "muddy spring", while the Slovak Blatnica comes from blato, mud. Two languages, the same wet ground.

  3. mid-13th centurypolovica 13. storočia The hill is abandonedKopec sa vyprázdni

Around the middle of the thirteenth century people stopped living on the hill. The lord's court was given up, the settlement around it broke apart, and the church was left standing empty; it stayed a ruin for roughly three hundred years. It is tempting to blame the Mongol invasion of 1241, which certainly swept through this country and terrified it, but the excavation does not prove it and honest accounts do not claim it. Settlements moved in that century for many reasons — a new landlord, a better site beside the road, the pull of the valley — and this is one of the cases where we know what happened but not why.

  4. 1530–1540; from the later 16th century1530 – 1540; od konca 16. storočia A widow rebuilds a ruinVdova obnoví ruinu

When the Ottomans destroyed the Hungarian army at Mohács in 1526, one of the dead was the husband of a noblewoman of the Thurzó family — and between 1530 and 1540 she had the ruined church on the hill repaired in his memory. The old walls were still standing four to seven metres high, which is why there was anything left to repair. Two written records name her as Mária Thurzová; work in the archives points rather to Magdaléna, and the disagreement has never been settled. Later in the same century a tiny hermitage was built against the church — the only surviving hermitage of its kind in Slovakia — and the spring pilgrimage, held on the Sunday after St George's day, 24 April, begins to be recorded.

  5. 1777; hermits into the early 1800s1777; pustovníci do začiatku 19. storočia Hermits, and a Baroque makeoverPustovníci a baroková prestavba

Somebody actually lived up here. Hermits occupied the little building against the church wall for generations and taught the children in the village school; the death of the second-to-last of them is entered in the parish register in 1804. In 1777 the church itself was rebuilt more drastically than at any time since the Middle Ages: a tower was raised in front of the entrance, brick vaults were thrown over the interior, and a gallery was put in above the door. That is the building you see today — an early medieval church in eighteenth-century clothes, which is exactly why its real age was so hard to see.

  6. 1820 and the 19th century1820 a 19. storočie The church comes down to the villageKostol zíde do dediny

In 1820 a parish church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross was built down in the village itself, and ordinary Sunday life moved off the hill for good. The hermitage buildings did not stand empty: the hermits' house went on working as a school through the nineteenth century and later became a forester's lodge. What the rotunda kept is what it still has — one pilgrimage a year, and the walk up through the beeches.V roku 1820 postavili priamo v dedine farský kostol Povýšenia svätého Kríža a bežný nedeľný život sa z kopca natrvalo presťahoval dolu. Pustovnícke stavby nezostali prázdne: dom pustovníkov slúžil počas 19. storočia ako škola a neskôr ako horáreň. Rotunde ostalo to, čo má dodnes – jedna púť do roka a cesta hore bučinou.

  7. 1939–19451939 – 1945 War in a village under the hillsVojna v dedine pod horami

The wartime Slovak State was declared on 14 March 1939 and was an ally of Nazi Germany. The Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944 in Banská Bystrica; when it was broken as an open front at the end of October, its fighters went on fighting from the forests, and the wooded ranges on either side of the Nitra valley — the Považský Inovec above this village among them — gave them cover through the winter while German units hunted them. The front reached the upper Nitra valley in the first days of April 1945.Vojnový Slovenský štát vznikol 14. marca 1939 a bol spojencom nacistického Nemecka. Slovenské národné povstanie sa začalo 29. augusta 1944 v Banskej Bystrici; keď ho koncom októbra zlomili ako otvorený front, jeho bojovníci pokračovali z hôr a zalesnené pohoria po oboch stranách nitrianskej doliny – medzi nimi Považský Inovec nad touto dedinou – ich celú zimu kryli, kým ich nemecké jednotky prenasledovali. Front prišiel do hornej nitrianskej doliny v prvých aprílových dňoch roku 1945.

  8. 1950s–196250. roky – 1962 Collectivised, and the last building goesDružstvo a koniec poslednej stavby

After 1948 the land around the village was collectivised — private strips merged into one co-operative farm, an upheaval that changed the look of the countryside more than anything since the forests were first cleared. Up on the hill the old hermits' house, by then a forester's lodge, was pulled down in 1962, so that the rotunda and its little hermitage have stood alone in the clearing ever since. The spring pilgrimage went quiet in these decades; it came back in its present form only after 1990.Po roku 1948 pôdu okolo dediny združstevnili – súkromné pásiky splynuli do jedného družstva, čo zmenilo tvár krajiny viac než čokoľvek od klčovania lesov.

  9. 2009–2016 and after2009 – 2016 a neskôr Restored, and still argued aboutZreštaurovaná a stále sporná

Between 2009 and 2016 the whole church, inside and out, together with its hermitage, was restored by the municipality and the civic association Rotunda Jurko under the restorer Jozef Dorica. In 2010 the work uncovered an original pre-Romanesque window opening in the south-west wall — one of the best pieces of evidence anybody has for the building's age — and radiocarbon dating of samples followed from 2016. The pilgrimage is held every spring around St George's day. The rotunda is normally locked; what you can count on is the marked path up through the beech wood and the building standing in its clearing, which is most of the point of coming.V rokoch 2009 až 2016 zreštaurovali celý kostolík zvnútra i zvonka aj s pustovňou – zabezpečila to obec spolu s občianskym združením Rotunda Jurko a viedol to reštaurátor Jozef Dorica.
