After the Ottoman defeat at Vienna in 1683 the imperial army went over to the attack. It arrived under Nové Zámky on 7 July 1685 and settled in for a summer siege; the assault went in on 19 August 1685 and the fortress surrendered about two hours later. The campaign was commanded by Charles V, Duke of Lorraine. In 1691 the Archbishop of Esztergom granted the civilian settlement that had survived under the walls the privileges of a town, and Nové Zámky began a second life as a town rather than a garrison.Po osmanskej porážke pri Viedni roku 1683 prešlo cisárske vojsko do útoku. Pod Nové Zámky prišlo 7. júla 1685 a usadilo sa na letné obliehanie; útok prišiel 19. augusta 1685 a pevnosť sa vzdala asi po dvoch hodinách. Ťaženiu velil Karol V. Lotrinský. Roku 1691 udelil ostrihomský arcibiskup civilnej osade, ktorá pod hradbami prežila, mestské výsady — a Nové Zámky začali druhý život ako mesto, nie ako posádka.
