The hill was fortified long before anyone here could write. A defended settlement stood on it in the Bronze Age around 1600 BC, Celts occupied it in the first century BC, and Slavs settled it permanently from about the turn of the eighth and ninth centuries. They built a massive rampart of earth and timber around the summit — the direct ancestor of every wall you see today, on the same line and for the same reason. By the end of the eighth century the fort was a prince's seat.Kopec bol opevnený dávno predtým, než tu vedel niekto písať. V dobe bronzovej, okolo roku 1600 pred n. l., na ňom stálo opevnené sídlisko, v 1. storočí pred n. l. ho obsadili Kelti a Slovania sa tu natrvalo usadili na prelome 8. a 9. storočia. Okolo vrcholu postavili mohutný val z hliny a dreva — priameho predka všetkých múrov, ktoré tu dnes vidíte, v tej istej línii a z toho istého dôvodu. Koncom 8. storočia bolo hradisko sídlom kniežaťa.
