History of Nitra CastleDejiny — Nitriansky hrad

A rock above the river Nitra that has been fortified since the Bronze Age and has been a bishop's seat for most of the last nine hundred years. That second fact is the reason it is a working cathedral complex today and not a ruin on a hill.

  1. 1600 BC – AD 8001600 pred n. l. – 800 n. l. Bronze Age, Celts, SlavsDoba bronzová, Kelti, Slovania

The hill was fortified long before anyone here could write. A defended settlement stood on it in the Bronze Age around 1600 BC, Celts occupied it in the first century BC, and Slavs settled it permanently from about the turn of the eighth and ninth centuries. They built a massive rampart of earth and timber around the summit — the direct ancestor of every wall you see today, on the same line and for the same reason. By the end of the eighth century the fort was a prince's seat. Okolo vrcholu postavili mohutný val z hliny a dreva — priameho predka všetkých múrov, ktoré tu dnes vidíte, v tej istej línii a z toho istého dôvodu. Koncom 8. storočia bolo hradisko sídlom kniežaťa.

  2. c. 828 – 907okolo 828 – 907 Pribina's church and the bishopric of 880Pribinov kostol a biskupstvo z roku 880

Around 828 Prince Pribina had a Christian church consecrated at Nitra by the archbishop of Salzburg — the first one recorded anywhere in what is now Slovakia. Tradition places that church on this rock and it may well have stood here, but archaeology has not settled the question and you will meet more than one candidate site in the books. What is not in doubt is the fortress itself, reported in writing in 871, and the bishopric founded here in 880 by papal bull with Wiching as its bishop. Great Moravia collapsed in the first decade of the tenth century and the bishopric lapsed with it — but the idea that this hill belongs to the church was already fixed.

  3. 11th century – c. 110511. storočie – okolo 1105 The stone castle, and a bishop returnsKamenný hrad a návrat biskupa

The stone castle was built in the eleventh century on the site of the old rampart fort, and the small Romanesque church of St Emmeram at the top of the rock belongs to that century too — it is already named in a text written about the middle of it. That church is still there: the oldest room in the complex, with walls absurdly thick for the space they enclose. In the same period the castle was the centre of a duchy — a third of the kingdom of Hungary, governed from Nitra by the king's younger brother or son. The bishopric was restored about 1105, and from then on the hill has had a bishop on it almost without a break.

  4. 1241 – 12481241 – 1248 Why this castle is the exceptionPrečo je tento hrad výnimkou

Almost every stone castle in Slovakia can be dated by 1241. The Mongol army swept through the kingdom, found a country defended mostly by wooden forts and left it burning; King Béla IV's answer was a building programme, which is why the great castles at Spiš, Trenčín, Beckov and dozens of others rose in the decades after the invasion rather than before it. Nitra is the exception that shows the rule, because its castle was already stone and already two centuries old when the Mongols came. The town below survived the invasion, and in 1248 the king rewarded it with the privileges of a free royal town. Mesto pod hradom vpád prežilo a roku 1248 mu kráľ udelil výsady slobodného kráľovského mesta.

  5. 1288 – 13551288 – 1355 Matúš Čák, and the cathedral of 1355Matúš Čák a katedrála z roku 1355

In 1288 the king gave the town of Nitra to its bishop as compensation for war damage, and from then on the man on the rock was a landlord as well as a churchman. The castle was attacked accordingly. In the early fourteenth century Matúš Čák of Trenčín, who ruled most of western Slovakia as his own private kingdom, damaged the castle and the town several times. Once he was gone a bishop from the Polish Piast family built a new Gothic cathedral on the rock — the tall, narrow upper church, finished in 1355, which you now reach by climbing steps out of the Baroque one below it.Roku 1288 kráľ daroval Nitru jej biskupovi ako náhradu za vojnové škody a muž na brale odvtedy nebol len cirkevným hodnostárom, ale aj zemepánom.

  6. 1526 – 16851526 – 1685 Rebuilt for cannon, taken in 1663Prestavaný pre delá, dobytý roku 1663

After Mohács in 1526 the Ottoman frontier came north and Nitra became a border fortress. Through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the medieval walls were thickened, bastions were pushed out at the corners for artillery, a Renaissance palace was built inside and a new inner gate closed the approach — most of the fortification you walk through today comes from those two centuries. Ottoman armies tried three times and failed. They took the castle in 1663, in the campaign that also captured the great fortress of Nové Zámky, and imperial troops recaptured it on 2 May 1664; raiding went on in the countryside until Nové Zámky itself fell back into Habsburg hands in 1685.Po Moháči roku 1526 sa osmanská hranica posunula na sever a Nitra sa stala pohraničnou pevnosťou. V 16. a 17. storočí stredoveké múry zhrubli, do rohov vysunuli delové bašty, vnútri vyrástol renesančný palác a prístup uzavrela nová vnútorná brána — väčšina opevnenia, ktorým dnes prechádzate, pochádza práve z týchto dvoch storočí. Osmanské vojská to skúsili trikrát a neuspeli.

  7. 1604 – 17111604 – 1711 The damage the Turks get blamed forŠkody, ktoré sa zvaľujú na Turkov

Ask in the town what wrecked the castle and someone will say the Turks. The record says otherwise. Nitra was fought over in the anti-Habsburg uprisings that ran for more than a century — Bocskai, Bethlen, and finally the kuruc war of Francis II Rákóczi from 1703 to 1711, when Rákóczi's commander Bercsényi took the castle — and the town below it burned down in 1708. Across Slovakia far more castles were wrecked in these civil wars, or deliberately demolished on Habsburg orders afterwards, than were ever destroyed by an Ottoman army.

  8. 18th century18. storočie The Baroque castle you actually visitBarokový hrad, na ktorý naozaj prídete

Every time the castle was damaged the bishops rebuilt it, and in the eighteenth century they rebuilt it in Baroque — which is the castle you walk into today. The bishop's palace went up on the courtyard, white and residential rather than defensive; the upper church was remodelled at the start of the century, and below it the seventeenth-century lower church received its vault and its marble altar relief. Into the corner of the outer bastion beside the bridge went a stone atlas figure, straining as though he alone were holding the wall up: Corgoň, whom the town turned into a blacksmith of legendary strength and whom passers-by still touch for luck. Three churches on three levels — Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque — fused into one building, which is why climbing up inside the cathedral is climbing backwards through eight hundred years.Vždy, keď hrad utrpel škody, biskupi ho obnovili — a v 18. storočí ho obnovili barokovo, takže dnes vchádzate práve do tejto podoby.

  9. 1944 – 19451944 – 1945 What the hill looked down onNa čo sa z kopca pozeralo

The castle came through the Second World War; the city underneath it did not. The Slovak National Uprising of 29 August 1944 never reached this far west, and the city was under German occupation instead. On Monday 26 March 1945 the Soviet 5th Air Army bombed Nitra on a market day, killing 345 people, most of them civilians, and troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front took the city days later. V pondelok 26. marca 1945 bombardovala sovietska 5. letecká armáda Nitru v trhový deň, zahynulo 345 ľudí, väčšinou civilistov, a o niekoľko dní mesto obsadili vojská 2. ukrajinského frontu.

  10. 1993 – today1993 – dnes Still a working bishop's seatStále fungujúce biskupské sídlo

This castle is not a museum that used to be something else. The Diocese of Nitra still has its seat in the bishop's palace, St Emmeram's is still the cathedral of a living diocese, and the Diocesan Museum beside the palace shows the manuscripts, silver and finds that belong to the hill. Restoration of the walls, the gate and the cathedral has run for decades and is not finished. That is the whole point of the place: almost every other great Slovak castle is a ruin because at some moment nobody needed it any more, and here that moment has never come.
