After Mohács in 1526 the Ottoman frontier came north and Nitra became a border fortress. Through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the medieval walls were thickened, bastions were pushed out at the corners for artillery, a Renaissance palace was built inside and a new inner gate closed the approach — most of the fortification you walk through today comes from those two centuries. Ottoman armies tried three times and failed. They took the castle in 1663, in the campaign that also captured the great fortress of Nové Zámky, and imperial troops recaptured it on 2 May 1664; raiding went on in the countryside until Nové Zámky itself fell back into Habsburg hands in 1685.Po Moháči roku 1526 sa osmanská hranica posunula na sever a Nitra sa stala pohraničnou pevnosťou. V 16. a 17. storočí stredoveké múry zhrubli, do rohov vysunuli delové bašty, vnútri vyrástol renesančný palác a prístup uzavrela nová vnútorná brána — väčšina opevnenia, ktorým dnes prechádzate, pochádza práve z týchto dvoch storočí. Osmanské vojská to skúsili trikrát a neuspeli. Hrad dobyli roku 1663, v ťažení, ktoré im prinieslo aj veľkú pevnosť Nové Zámky; cisárske vojsko ho získalo späť 2. mája 1664 a nájazdy v okolí neprestali, kým sa roku 1685 nevrátili do habsburských rúk aj Nové Zámky.
